Bahamontes Tantrum, a Belgian Takes the Victory
As much as the 1959 Vuelta a Espana provided great racing excitement, the 1960 edition achieved great disappointment. All eyes were on Federico Bahamontes, the first Spanish winner of the 1959 Tour de France. A hero in Spain, Bahamontes would be in the center of controversy and shameful behavior.

Race Summary:
Stage 9: Belgian Franz De Mulder took the race lead with a six-rider breakaway. Steadily the group gained valuable time from the contenders. At the finish in Barcelona Salvador Botella won the stage, but the big winner was De Mulder. The Belgian gained 37’37” on his rivals. The massive time gain shook-up the GC, Charly Gaul trailed by 40’25”, Bahamontes by 41’39”, Suarez by 45’29” and Lorono by 49’03”.
Stage 14: There was solid racing and a constant change at the head of the race until the fourteenth stage. The penultimate stage from San Sebastian to Vitoria saw two major highlights, a struggling climber Charly Gaul (Lux) abandon the race and the controversial disqualification of Bahamontes' main lieutenant Julian San Emeterio. San Emeterio finished the stage outside the time limit and following the rules race officials put him out of the race. An angry Bahamontes threatened race officials with his own withdrawal. To their credit the race referee San Roman and director Luis Bergareche told Bahamontes “abandon if you must, but I do not accept blackmail, and I will report everything to the Federacion." With only thirty-eight riders left in the Vuelta the Spanish climber relented and remained in the race.
Stage 15: But that was not the end of the controversy! On the next stage Bahamontes began hitting a fan with his bicycle pump for hurling insults at the Spaniard. Bahamontes finished the stage an hour and a half behind stage winner Arthur De Cabooter (Bel). Bahamontes abandoned the race claiming an attack of appendicitis (?).
Stage 16: Overshadowed by Bahamontes' shameless behavior, Belgian Franz De Mulder rode a superior race. He took the race lead on Stage 16 with the stage win. De Mulder took another stage win in Guernica, while his teammate and race leader Armand Desmet lost fifteen minutes.
Stage 17: Franz De Mulder rode into Bilbao to complete a beautiful race despite the pains suffered by the other stars of the race.
